ONCE I DIDN’T DROWN IN A LAKE
Meghan Tutolo

Instead I sat with you the way
I always dreamed I would, so in love
I could’ve swallowed the brown water
and everything in it, singing “Hallelujah”
because it’s the only low song
we both knew and we both knew
we’d have to pick up your daughter soon
so we didn’t care how we sounded
keeping time with our palms slapping
earth, bodies pressed to the grass
in spring waiting for an avalanche.
