What Precedes a Dash
For Emily D.

Jess Wigent

brave June
nests not in fringes of summer her secret
breeze thirsts for crowded shores
prays for fewer bees

a boy, mind the breeze, a secret voice

blue June
homesick for fall June give the father a history
of robins, mind the scarf of heaven, June
give the boy a name

the robin observes a father

tell him June
tell him of the anguish of robins, tell him
"see the sister's willing illness"

a sister, mind the breeze, a secret robin

go away June
trained to partake
in tears on land, to eye the back pain
of heaven, June you love the haze

were love planted there as feet here

come back June,
a death carol nests below the robin
the boy observes a seraph, even the deer
partake in red woe
